Willa Wins a Spacecraft
By M.B. Alexander
Willa never won a thing in her life, and it's not that she didn't try. She frequently put herself at the forefront, bravely sending her projects and ideas to several competitions in the solar system.
It was hard for her to fathom how her miniature echo system hats didn't make the cut. Or how her majestic hover cakes didn't beat out a simple chocolate lava cake that erupted in the local bake sale. It was even more disheartening when she saw her idea for liquid nano-clothes in a milk carton, mass-produced without any mention of her name.
At times she wanted to give up, she searched for suitable jobs, but as an organic human with an eclectic toolbox of skills, that was no easy task.
If she was a rich girl, she could just produce her inventions on her own. But in such a saturated market getting anything out without the proper holographic marketing and an army of brilliant humanoid Ai that could swiftly calculate the right maneuver at every moment in the market, would be futile.
She could have saved up for a tech-carnation and switched her organic form into a much less tedious and food-consuming cyborg body. But she wanted to succeed as herself. Often that seemed like a silly useless notion.
But when Willa finally held the keys to her very own, new, state-of-the-art, spacecraft it all made sense. With a fully self-automated kitchen, a level ten android companion, and a designer control room she was suddenly living the dream.
It was all so very worth it when she zoomed freely through the stars. After all, she would have never thought to create a mood-body reading teapot-bot that knew just when to make you tea and what kind you need. No one likes to make tea when they're sick or sad, but a comforting cup of tea always does the trick.
An invention that made her feel better, made others feel better. With a new spacecraft, there were no limits for Willa, a fresh manufacturing contract for her new self-scooping-mood-reading ice cream, has already been signed. It was especially for breakups, no one wants to scoop for themselves while crying.
Willa, like many of us, has had more than her fair share of failure. When you're down it's hard to find that motivation to rise again and get back to it. Whatever “it” is for you. But remember flying freely through open space doesn't come cheaply. Failure is often the price we pay to become better at what we do. We must accept it and evolve with a smile.
This is just the beginning for Willa, and we can't wait to see what more her quirky bio-brain contributes to society.
Now, one could argue that those said images are still a chosen expression of an individual and therefore still a true expression of the self. But what about all the hidden parts they have chosen not to show. With only a partial view of someone’s selected parts, who’s to say if what we are facing is a real person or only the notion of a person.
